Yogourt

Back

What are the different types of yogourt?

Stirred yogourt is fermented in a vat and then shaken, which gives the product its smooth consistency. Stirred yogourt may contain either natural or artificial flavours. Fruit may be added, depending on the recipe. You'll find stirred yogourt in the refrigerated products section of your grocer under the brand names Yoplait Basket Fat-free, Yoplait Source, Yoplait Creme & fruit, Yoplait Tubes and Spring Valley.

Unlike stirred yogourt, firm yogourt is fermented directly in its container and then cooled. That's why firm yogourt has a more gelatinous texture. It is flavoured with fruit and flavours deposited at the bottom of the cup, or mixed in with the milk. In Canada, these yogourts are offered by Ultima Foods under the brand names Yoplait Delicieux Set Style, Parfait and Yoplait Source Fruit at the Bottom.

Drinkable yogourt or yogourt drinks are made from fermented milk with added fruits, flavours and sugars. Yop from Yoplait is very popular among consumers.

Can yogourt be frozen?

While its nutritional value remains unchanged, freezing will considerably alter the texture of yogourt, so we don't recommend it. However, it's perfectly all right to freeze Yoplait Tubes, which are specially formulated to freeze well.

Why is there sometimes a liquid on the surface of my yogourt?

Commercial manufacturing techniques result in a firmer yogourt that is less likely to secrete lactoserum, the yellowish liquid that is sometimes found on the surface of yogourt. Lactoserum, a natural ingredient found in milk, is a liquid/serum containing a number of essential nutrients. If you happen to find some on the surface, just mix it in with the rest and enjoy the full nutritional value of yogourt.

Why is there a "best before" date on containers?

Yogourts and fresh cheeses are perishable products; the date simply tells consumers how fresh the product is and how long it will keep.

Top

What does the date mean?

It's the expiry date. An expiry date is the date before which an unopened product retains it freshness, taste, and nutritional value. Be sure to store your yogourt at a steady temperature between 1-4°C.

How long is yogourt edible after the expiry date?

As with all dairy products, yogourts - like fresh cheeses - must be consumed before the expiry date. Consequently, all products shall be consumed before the expiry date.

What happens to a product after its "best before" date?

Once the date has passed, the food may undergo a slight loss of flavour and its texture may change. As yogourt deteriorates rapidly, we do not recommend to consume it after the expiry date.

Who determines what information is printed on containers?

Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) are jointly responsible for applying federal food labelling policies.

Health Canada is responsible for determining labelling policies for all foods sold in Canada. The CFIA is responsible for enforcing regulations by testing food products to make sure they conform to existing regulations.

Are Yoplait dairy products kosher?

Because they contain gelatine - which is derived from beef bones - Yoplait yogourts cannot be certified as kosher in Canada.
