My father had died suddenly in the night. When I came back from the hospital. I found my toddler playing in her room, talking on her toy phone, having no clue what had just happened. When she "hung up", I asked her: "What are you doing, Gabrielle?" and she said: "I was talking to Gandpapa. He was saying goodbye to me."

I thought I was a pretty hip young dad... until my daughter caught me on the balcony, deep in thought, and asked me: "What are you thinking about, old man?"

Can anyone say melodrama? When my daughter's kindergarten teacher informed me that my child could turn on the waterworks at the drop of a hat, I decided to broach the issue by asking my little actress why she kept tissue paper in her desk. "Well, I cry a lot", she said on cue. "Why?" I smiled. "I don't know. I keep thinking of sad songs."

The last time I saw my second cousin, she was just a baby. Now she was possibly the sweetest 8 year-old on the face of the earth. Or was she just trying to get into my will... ? "What!!!!!!! You're 40!!!!!" She turned to me with shock, upon learning my age. "Yesssss," I said, wondering where this was going. "No way! I thought you were a teenager!"

I was babysitting my granddaughter when she suddenly turned to me and said: "Grandma, do you know what I love best about your house?" "No, Sarah, what?" I replied. "You."
