Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are the number one source of antioxidants. Therefore, when
you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, they provide you
with different substances that are good for your health, such as vitamins,
minerals, fibre, and antioxidants.
The Canadian Food Guide and the World Health Organization recommend eating at
least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day (a serving equals a
medium-sized fruit or vegetable). In fact, this contributes to good health and
also prevents many diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, Type II diabetes,
obesity and some cancers.
In July 2006, the results from the Canadian Community Health Survey were
published in the report "Overview of Canadians Eating Habits 2004." Once again,
they indicate that adults have a low consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Indeed, more than half of Canadian adults do not eat the recommended five daily
servings of fruits and vegetables. This coincides with the Canadian Food
Guide's recommendation to eat a variety of foods every day.
According to the book Les aliments contre le cancer [Foods that fight
cancer] by Richard Béliveau, Ph. D., the fruits with the most antioxidants per
serving are field berries (wild blueberries, cranberries, strawberries,
raspberries and blackberries), plums and some varieties of apples.
