Bacteria that are good for your health
The digestive tract of an adult contains up to 100 000 billion of approximately
500 kinds of bacteria that are generally good for our health
(2). These good bacteria stimulate the immune
system, have an antagonist function against pathogenic bacteria, and contribute
to the supply of various nutrients to their host by digesting fibre and
synthesizing vitamins.
Several factors can disrupt the good bacteria living in the intestine: age,
dietary modifications, antibiotics, or decreased immune system function.
Probiotic bacteria can then be useful to restore balance between both good and
bad bacteria.
